Make a list of the features that are most important to you, and then find a plan that includes all of them in the base rate. For example, some VoIP providers allow you to check voicemail by phone, web, or email, while others limit you to one or two of those options. If you need multiple ways to access voicemail, choose the VoIP plan that offers the most options.

Customer Service

For some people, customer service is the most important factor. If you want a VoIP service that will always be available to answer your questions, compare the customer service sections of their websites, especially the number of ways you can reach them. Consider calling their toll-free number to ask a question about their service to get a feel for how they treat customers.

Reputation

If you prefer name-brand products, then look for a VoIP provider with a name you're familiar with. Keep in mind, though, that larger providers aren't always better. In some cases, they simply charge more. If you're unsure about a potential VoIP provider, search for online reviews about their products and services. Even if it's not a name you're familiar with, they might be the best service for you.

Billing

Billing is another area of concern for some people. While one person is comfortable having their credit card billed monthly, other people prefer not to give that information out. If you want flexibility in your billing, look for an internet phone service that offers paper billing or automatic withdrawals.

Portability

If you're a frequent traveler or split your year between two locations, you may want to be able to take your VoIP service with you. Contact the services you're considering to find out if you can use the service anywhere you have high-speed access and your adapter. You should also consider the size of the VoIP adapter if you're a frequent traveler.
