The only piece of VoIP hardware you really need is the broadband adapter. You can use any telephone with VoIP, but to get the most out of your VoIP service, you should consider buying telephones or videophones designed for use with VoIP or that extend your VoIP service to other rooms of your house.
Broadband Adapter - Mandatory VoIP Hardware
You must have a VoIP broadband adapter to use the service. The adapter is the device that transforms your voice data into digital packets and transmits them over your internet connection. The adapter also converts incoming calls so you can hear them. If you already have a router, then you can plug your adapter into any free slot. If you plug your computer directly into your DSL or cable internet adapter, you'll need to buy a router. Your provider supplies you with a basic VoIP adapter free, but you can also upgrade to a model that integrates the adapter, router, and a cordless phone into one convenient unit.
Handsets
Once VoIP is set up in your home, you still need to use a telephone to make and receive calls. You can choose any corded or cordless phone that plugs into a regular wall outlet. You can't use a wireless cellular telephone.
If you'd like more than one extension, you can buy a multi-phone adapter that plugs into the wall, or you can buy a base unit with several cordless extensions. The extensions have small bases that plug into electrical outlets to charge the handsets, but don't need to be connected to a telephone outlet. For best results, put the base unit near the computer that is closest to the center of the house.
Videophone
Traditional telephone companies haven't mastered videophone technology, but VoIP makes it possible. All you need is a pair of videophones and VoIP service on both ends of the call. Most calling plans include videophone service in the basic monthly rate, so you can make as many video calls as you want.
VoIP hardware can be purchased from your provider or from any retail store that carries cordless phones, base units with extensions, or videophones. You may also be able to find combination broadband adapters and routers from retail outlets.
VoIP gives you the low rates and quality service you expect from internet telephony, but doesn't tether you to the computer or require you to buy special equipment.
