If you're considering switching from another telephone service to IP telephony, there are several factors that could make a difference in your decision. IP telephony is another name for VoIP, which provides telephone service through your internet connection. While 8 VoIP is certainly less expensive than traditional telephone services, it may not be the best choice in some situations. Before you sign up, make sure none of these factors apply to you.
Do you have broadband access?
If you don't, then IP telephony won't work for you. Dial-up connections are simply not fast enough to support VoIP calls.
Is your broadband service reliable?
If you suffer from frequent broadband service outages, even for just a few seconds, then IP telephony may not be reliable. Before signing up for VoIP, contact your broadband provider so they can repair your service. The issue could be with your equipment, at the box on the street, or in the central office. Only your broadband provider can determine the source of the problem.
Do you have frequent power outages?
If your home often suffers from power outages, including brownouts, then IP telephony isn't a good choice. Because VoIP requires an active broadband internet connection with an adapter that plugs in and a working router, you won't have phone service during a power outage. If you frequently lose power, contact the power company to resolve the problem before ordering VoIP service.
Do you have a medical condition that requires frequent 911 calls?
Although VoIP providers are continuously improving 911 and e-911 service, not all 911 centers can receive calls from VoIP customers. In some cases, the center can receive the call, but you must be able to give your physical location. If you have a medical condition that requires frequent 911 calls, then you should opt for a traditional landline phone to ensure you receive the emergency services you need.
Do you need fax capability?
If you need to send or receive regular faxes opt for a VoIP service that has this capability or request a dedicated fax line from your local telephone company.
Can you commit to a one-year contract?
Although IP telephony is available throughout the US and in most other countries, it does rely on broadband access. If you will be relocating to an area without broadband access in the next year, or can't otherwise commit to a one-year contract, then VoIP is not the best choice for you.
Do you have a credit card?
Most IP telephony services charge monthly payments to a credit card. If you don't have a credit or debit card, then VoIP is not the right choice for you.
If none of these factors apply to you, then VoIP is an excellent choice for your local phone service. Not only will you save money, but you'll receive excellent service you can take anywhere.
